Australia Day in Narrandera Shire

Australia Day 2020 was filled with community spirit around the Shire, with celebrations across Narrandera, Barellan and Grong Grong.

Marie Bashir Park was filled with families and friends for the official ceremony, who watched on as Narrandera gained two new citizens - Mr George Thomas De Lange from South Africa and Mr Jojan Mathew from India, who each received a complementary 2020 gold coin from the Perth Mint to commemorate their citizenships.

This year Mayor Kschenka acknowledged our local Rural Fire Services members, Volunteer Firefighters, emergency services and community for their hard work and support during the horrendous bushfires that have affected our nation.

Riverina Mens Choir supported by Mary Sutcliffe, and 2019 Citizen of the Year Dr Joe Romeo together with daughter Phoebe, gave several enjoyable performances during the proceedings, while the Lions Club started the day with a BBQ breakfast in the park.

Australia Day Ambassador, Olympian Matthew Levy OAM joined Mayor Neville Kschenka to announce the nominees and winners for each category of the Australia Day awards. Each category consisted of worthy recipients and the winners for 2020 are:

  • Citizen of the Year – Louise Mulligan
  • Young Citizen of the Year – Braden Lyons
  • Senior Citizen of the Year – Bob and Neta Close
  • Organisation of the Year – Narrandera Golf Club Volunteers

Congratulations to all of our Australia Day 2020 nominees and winners.
