Narrandera Shire Council recently provided the opportunity for residents to complete their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) qualification locally.
Fourteen participants completed the course with ten local residents aged from 17 to 25 years eligible for a 50 per cent subsidy under a road safety project to address the issue of drink driving. This reduced the course cost to $80 instead of the normal course fee of $160.
The project targeted 17-25 year olds as they are over represented in the crash statistics with almost 50 per cent of drivers in crashes with alcohol as a contributing factor in the 2014-2018 period in this age group.
The aim of the RSA training is to educate young adults about:
- the legislation relating to the responsible service of alcohol in NSW
- the impact of alcohol abuse on families, communities and tax payers
- preventing intoxication, underage drinking and drink driving
“Young people had the opportunity to gain their RSA Certificate when they might not have been able to otherwise. Completion of the course can open up employment opportunities and in addition participants learnt about the dangers and consequences of drink driving,” said Elizabeth Mudford, Narrandera Shire Councils Road Safety Officer.
The RSA course provides an opportunity to educate young people about the effects of alcohol.
The value of the RSA course for employment opportunities helps to encourage participation in the project. Participants received a Plan B t-shirt, suitable to wear when serving alcohol, to help share the road safety message.
There are plans for another subsidised course in the first half of 2020. To be placed on a waiting list please contact Narrandera Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer on 02 6959 5510.
